superpower: taking incredible license photos. i’m okay with having this in my wallet for eight years.
sibs, 2004.
[ages 3, 5, 7, 10, 13, 17, and 15. my brother ruined the chronological arrangement with his height.]
another studio shoot.
model: melissa williamson
backstory: the only class i loved in my photo program was studio. i imagined it would be like america’s next top model, except better because i was making photographs. i was right. we had a setup in the back of the chapel hill news (i think our class was the last to use it…we may have been the reason they booted us from the space) and we would PLAY. i spent a good three hours there shooting a fruit tart once.
this photo was made at the beginning of the course. melissa (who has gone on to become a crazy successful wedding photographer) stood behind a softbox and we backlit her. this photo was published in UNC’s literary magazine.
photography is an opportunity to create and play and have fun, and that is what i love about it.
note to self: you do have talent.
shoegaze, minus the music.
backstory: i look at my feet a lot. it helps to have cute shoes.
i play dress-up when the light is beautiful.
backstory: i have a collection of gorgeous dresses. i like to wear them. deal with it.
shadows.
backstory: sometimes i get in this creative flow where i HAVE to have my camera with me all day. i wander all over the place and end up with 5 to 10 pictures that i love, a tan, and i go to bed happy.
now, to do that more…
Shit Photojournalists Like: Camera Tilt
photo by the legendary Aleksandr Rodchenko
Tired of taking the same old photograph? There is a solution, my friend, and what a solution it is. TILT YOUR CAMERA.
THIS IS A NEW AND INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUE THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE.
We are embarking on an age of diagonals and slants. No…
camera tilt gives me a rage stroke. i used to yell at my staffers for it, especially this one guy who shot an entire soccer game with EXTREMETILT. also he oversaturated the shit out of his images and pre-edited.

i’m not usually a big fan of iphone photos as art, but i like the way this picture of the fog turned out. i feel like i live on the moors. also, i can’t wait for polaroid film to make a comeback!
